01 / What this is

A Sunday that isn't like the other ones

Here is the shape of it. On September 13th the rally starts at two in the afternoon in the parking lot at The Link, and it costs nothing to walk up.

Juliette Angelo plays. Aquile plays. DC Martinez hosts the whole thing. The run of the whole place, and a crowd full of people your age.

That is the youth side of the day.

At the same time, over in the gymnasium, there is a session built for parents. Brandi Sorenson and Cathy Holman of Prairie Wife in Heels lead a panel discussion on how to protect children on and offline, and both will share personal testimony from their own experience. Ryan Heib from Internet Crimes Against Children and Terri Markham from Uprising Wyoming are also speaking. Child care is provided for parents who attend.

So a family can pull up at two o'clock and split into the two things that actually make sense for them. Nobody waits in a hallway. Nobody gets dragged to something built for somebody else.

Casper Community Churches put this together, and it is happening at The Link, the Casper Youth for Christ building at 353 West A Street. The rally takes over the parking lot and the parent session runs inside, so the whole place is in use for the day.

04 / For parents

The gymnasium

If you are dropping a teenager off at two o'clock, consider staying. The parent session runs the same hours, in the gymnasium.

The parent education session runs in the gymnasium, in the same window as the rally, and it addresses one subject: how to protect children on and offline. It is structured as a panel discussion, with parents invited to take part rather than sit and listen.

Brandi Sorenson and Cathy Holman of Prairie Wife in Heels lead the panel. Both will share personal testimony drawn from their own experience in this area.

Juliette Angelo plays for the parent session as well, so the afternoon is not all talk.

Ryan Heib is speaking. He works with Internet Crimes Against Children, the ICAC program. Terri Markham is speaking as well, from Uprising Wyoming.

Child care is provided for parents who attend, so a younger sibling is not a reason to skip it.

You do not need a background in any of this. Most parents attending will be there for the same reason you are, which is that the internet moved faster than the advice about it did.

Why a panel instead of a talk

A lecture delivers information. A panel that takes questions lets you apply it. The distinction matters here, because the questions parents actually have tend to be specific, and they rarely get raised in a room where nobody is able to interrupt.

The format also means you leave with something practical rather than a handout, and a clear sense of what you intend to change at home.

Bring your questions

The questions worth asking are often the ones that feel too basic to raise. Which app is that. Should I be reading the messages. How should I handle the group chat. Who do I contact if something has already happened.

Bring those questions with you. The panel is there to answer them.
